When Team USA and Serbia matched up in pool play, Team USA was lucky enough to escape with a three point victory. Serbia missed a three at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime.
That win was coming off a three point victory over Australia, which team USA trailed at halftime, and was out hustled and outworked by a scrappy Australian team. After those two close victories, some doubt started to creep in about team USA chances of winning gold. Remember Team USA was expected to run away win the gold medal at the Rio Olympics. There were questions about the makeup of this team and how it had to many ball dominant players.
Now in the gold medal game/ rematch against Serbia, Team USA inserted its dominance early on with great ball movement, fast breaks points, and there signature runs. It wasn’t just on the offense end that Team USA insisted its will, but also on the defensive end. They held Serbia to 66 points on 37% shooting. Team USA finally played like the complete team we all expected them to be. Kevin Durant lead team USA in scoring with 30 points.
This Olympics was tougher than expected for Team USA, but they walk away with there third straight gold medal.
As we look ahead to the 2020 Olympics, Coach Gregg Popovich will take over for Coach Mike Krzyzewaki as head coach of Team USA. Lebron has also expressed his interest in playing for coach Pop and Team USA, depending on how his body holds up. It will be interesting to see in four years which team steps up to challenge team USA.
